Postcard to parliament
"I am writing to ask you to consider the case for decriminalising
abortion. As I’m sure you know, New Zealand women do not have
the right to choose whether or not to end a pregnancy. Instead, that
decision is made for them by certifying consultants under laws that
are outdated, costly and ineffective.
More than 98 percent of all abortions performed in New Zealand
are approved under the so-called mental health ground – a statistic
that highlights not just the hypocrisy of these laws, but also how
demeaning they are to women. When this legislation was passed
in 1977, politicians had a “conscience vote” on abortion. I believe
New Zealand women deserve no less than their MPs – the right to
make their own decision on abortion."
