ALRANZ Disappointed Over Early Medical Abortion Decision

MEDIA RELEASE
Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand
17 February 2011

ALRANZ is extremely disappointed that Family Planning has withdrawn its bid to provide early medical abortions at its Hamilton clinic, the association’s president, Dame Margaret Sparrow, said today.

Family Planning applied nearly two years ago for a licence to provide abortion using the two drugs Mifegyne (mifepristone) followed by misoprostol. Dame Margaret said she was concerned it had taken this long for an outcome.

“Many New Zealand women have trouble accessing early termination of pregnancy, and a service like the one proposed by Family Planning would have gone a long way to improve that situation,” she said.

“We hope Family Planning will re-apply.”
