ALRANZ is a voluntary organisation which believes that it is a woman's right to be able to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy.
Abortion is a health matter, not a crime.

Our Aims and Objectives

We want the law changed to allow women free choice – to be able to choose whether to continue with an unplanned pregnancy or to obtain an abortion.

  • Abortion is not a substitute for contraception but a backup in case of failure.
  • Anti-abortionists should not be allowed to impose their views on others.
  • By their actions people who conscientiously object to abortion should not jeopardise the care of women.
  • Human relationships education should be taught in all schools covering the social, ethical, and physical aspects of sexuality

Our History

ALRANZ The Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand was incorporated on 11 February 1971. During 1970 the anti-abortion campaign became organised in New Zealand with the formation of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child (SPUC) at a public meeting in Auckland in March 1970, with high profile medical professional Professor (later Sir) William Liley as the first National President. This campaign invoked a reaction, with some people questioning the veracity of SPUC's claims, particularly with regard to the medical consequences of abortion and the experience of overseas countries with liberal laws. They also saw clearly the suffering of unhappily pregnant women seeking abortion under New Zealand laws and practice at that time and were concerned for the need for children to be born to mothers who wanted them.

NATIONAL PRESIDENT: Dr Morgan Healey

Dr Morgan Healey took over the leadership of ALRANZ in March after the association’s longtime president, Dame Margaret Sparrow, stepped down from the post at the AGM in Wellington. Morgan brings to the role a background in women’s studies and pro-choice activism. Born and raised in the United States, Morgan graduated with a B.A. from Connecticut College in New London where her studies inspired what was to become an abiding interest in feminist issues. During her undergraduate years, Morgan spent a semester in Amsterdamstudying the intersection of gender, sexuality and identity.
